Compared to these decades, the 2010s looks a lot more happy-go-lucky, doesn’t it? Now, moving on to another point I want to make. The president was George Bush Jr, a man of many controversies. Green Day, Blink-182 and Fallout Boy were huge. One of the biggest music genres was punk. And while those things have been normalized in society today, back then they were groundbreaking and edgy. Alternative rock bands like Nirvana and Radiohead were wildly popular, and some of the most widespread shows on television were The Simpsons and Married with Children, both deconstructions of light-hearted family sitcoms of the past. The 90s was about going against the system. Compare all of these factors to other decades. There are definitely people who have strong opinions on him now, but at the time he was seen as harmless. And his “Hope” campaign is, to me, the perfect indicator of why the 2010s were so different. Most people either liked him or had no strong opinions on him. Sure there were people who didn’t like him, but due to his general inoffensiveness, these people were the minority. And he was generally a non-controversial person at the time. He was the president throughout the entirety of the early 2010s. And finally, what I think is the biggest indicator of the different culture of the time (at least in America): the president. All of these songs are super upbeat and positive. Songs like Call Me Maybe, Gangnam Style and Happy for example. Think of some of the most popular music from the decade, also. Stuff like Philosorator or Troll Face were way more inoffensive than the memes of today, and DEFINITELY more inoffensive than the memes of the mid to late 2010s. Memes took off in the early 2010s, and they were way less cynical and irony-coded than they are now. The culture of the first half of 2010s was generally more about positivity and having fun than the second half. And I think the reason is because of how quickly things changed once the middle of the decade hit. However on the internet, early 2010s nostalgia is still big. While 80s nostalgia got big in the mid 2000s, it wasn’t really mass marketed until the 2010s. And while the media aesthetic hasn’t been mass marketed by corporations yet, you have to remember that it took a while for the other decades too. With the early 2010s (and I guess by extension the late 2000s but mostly the early 2010s) got big in 2019 and exploded when the pandemic started in March 2020. All of them took at least a decade before mass amounts of people made the decade an aesthetic. 1980s nostalgia didn’t get big until the mid-2000s, 90s nostalgia got big in the early 2010s, and 2000s nostalgia got big in the mid 2010s. With other decades, it took a while for nostalgia of said decade to become mainstream. This is gonna be a long post lol, just an FYI.
